The experience of organization of psychology teaching at the Yaroslavl State Medical Academy

Psychology and pedagogy teaching is considered to be an important part of the professional physician’s training by the Scientific staff of the YSMA. In according with the decision of the Scientific staff teaching volume was 25% increased in comparison with the Federal Standard. Not only basic course is taught at the faculties (medical, pediatristic, pharmaceutical): optional courses are also held.

The main directions of psychology teaching development are:

  1. Broadening of the psychology teaching for all-years students, apart from the compulsory education in the 2-nd and 4-th years of study (elective courses are held in the 1-st, 4-th, 5-th, and 6-th years of education). Senior students have professionally directed optional courses for example: “Psychological problems in oncology”, “Psychological assistance in crisis”, “Psychosexual personal development”, “Organized playing methods in pediatrist’s practice” and etc.
  2. Broadening of the psychology teaching after the last year of study; collaboration with interns and house-surgeons (there’s experience of co-operation with psychiatrists, surgeons, pediatrists already).
  3. Considerable strengthening of psychological and pedagogical education of the academy’s lecturers, lecturers of specialized medical schools who are retrained at the YSMA.
  4. Introduction of psychological and pedagogical knowledges into the material of other chairs; co-operation with psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians of the propaedeutic chairs, specialists organizing health protection and so on.
  5. Insertion psychological topics into the physician’s retraining programs, into the manager’s of different health centers work.

Scientific research work on problems of psychology as a branch of medicine; the results are used in teaching (more than 200 items and articles on medical psychology problems were published by YSMA’s lecturers during last five years in Russia and other countries).

Insertion of active methods of teaching, including role games, video training, self-examination of personal peculiarities and etc.

Work of the student’s scientific society on the topic “Psychology in medicine”.
